On our trip to Orlando, Florida, we had the pleasure of sitting down with some members of the professional football team, Orlando Pride. With the beginning of their season in NWSL rapidly approaching, we wanted to talk to the footballers, hear their stories, learn about their passions, and discuss the importance of women in sports.
Toni Pressley was the first player we sat down with. She currently plays as a defender with Orlando, and during the NWSL off-season played in Australia with Canberra United in the 2017-2018 W-League Season. Her passion for her sport is evident, as is her passion for food, and animals, and we're honoured to share this with you all today.
Who are some women that inspire you?
Wow. The first thing that came to my head, is my mother. She's very strong, independent, I grew up with her as a single parent. Just the sacrifices she's made to get me to where I am today is just, something I'm always grateful for, and I look up to her.
"it is that simple, go for it, do it, and don't let anyone tell you you can't do it."
What are you passionate about?
I'm passionate about a lot of things. I'm passionate about soccer, I'm passionate about animals, helping those in need, and giving back.
What's the most impactful piece of advice you've been given?
A friend of mine basically quoted the movie 'Bleed for This' where in an interview at the end of the movie, he is asked "What's the biggest lie anyone's told you?", and the character says "it's not that simple". What he's basically saying is, he disagrees with that. It is that simple, go for it, do it, and don't let anyone tell you you can't do it.
What does confidence mean to you?
I think confidence starts with loving yourself, and believing in yourself, your abilities, and what you can do.
"it's important just because it empowers us."
What's your advice for women and girls?
My advice to women, is just: be who you were intended to be.
Why do you think it's important for girls and women to play sport?
I think it's important just because it empowers us. It uplifts us, and it teaches us so many things, and we can do things these amazing male athletes can do as well.
The Pride will play their first game of the 2018 NWSL season in Orlando against the Utah Royals on March 24th, at 7:30pm EST. Head here for all the details on the 2018 NWSL Schedule, Orlando Pride's Schedule, and for tickets.
