Like A Girl - Patti Murin

Patti Murin

Nope, no April Fools. Everybody, this is the lovely Patti Murin. A talented singer, actress and dancer, bachelor/ette fan, carer of (very cute) puppies and wife to Colin Donnell. I have been following along with her musings on twitter and her blog for over a year now and it was so much fun getting to chat with her. I hope you all enjoy!

Tell us about yourself.

My name is Patti Murin, and I am a 35 year old dog lover, wife, actress, singer, Bachelor-watcher and wine enthusiast, in no particular order!

What do you do?

I am an actress. I’ve done mainly musical theatre, but I have also done a bit of TV.

When did you first become interested in theatre?

My parents took me and my siblings to Broadway shows growing up, so I was raised listening to cast albums and with an excellent appreciation for the art in general. I auditioned for “Cinderella” in 6th grade and was absolutely thrilled to be cast as a mouse. I continued from there, through junior high and high school, and when it came time to think about college, there was nothing else I wanted to do. So I went to Syracuse University and got a BFA in Musical Theatre.

Who are some women that inspire you?

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey come to mind first. They are hilarious, smart, driven women who didn’t take no for an answer, and demonstrate how when women support each other instead of compete, we can do anything. They’re not afraid of looking stupid, because they know that stupid is usually funniest. They have incredible respect for themselves and their talents, and I think are some of the best female role models of this time.

What are you passionate about?

Rescuing dogs! I volunteer for a brand new dog rescue in NYC named Muddy Paws Rescue. I started volunteering about a year ago, and it changed my perspective almost instantly. I’ve always loved dogs, but this has given me an entirely new appreciation for not just them, but also the humans who are incredible enough to adopt them. To take in a dog whose history you don’t know, and to give that dog love and comfort and security is one of the simplest and most difficult things to do.
I’m also passionate about anything Bachelor-related. For real.

Most helpful piece of advice someone has given you?

The sooner you accept that life is not fair, the better off you will be. I wasted years caring about fairness (I’m a Libra), and as soon as I realized that I was just wasting energy worrying and complaining, I was able to direct my attention to more productive places.

Why do you do what you do and what do you love most about what you do?

I’ve always loved to perform. I just decided one day when I was about 11 that I could sing, and thank goodness I had some sort of pitch, because that was that. I liked belting because it was an excuse to be loud. I picked up dance steps naturally, so I continued with that. It just came easy to me when I was younger. As I got older and more serious about it, obviously nothing comes easy with the business! But the performance aspect of it has always been a natural fit for me. I love making people laugh. Once I discovered I could do it, I never wanted to stop.

Are there challenges you have faced in your work specifically because you’re women? If so, how did you overcome them?

Absolutely. Historically the business is dominated by white men, and while it is changing bit by bit, the majority of roles are written for males. The only way to overcome that is to keep your head down and work hard. Create your own work. Don’t settle because you have less options, but don’t pass up opportunities without truly considering them first.

Are there any particular people who you would absolutely love to collaborate with on something or people you would like to meet?

One person I REALLY want to work with again (on something that the world will actually see) is Casey Hushion, the genius director. She has been “Book of Mormon” and “Something Rotten” director Casey Nicholaw’s associate for years, and she was the fearless leader of the Broadway show, “Nerds,” which got cancelled 2 weeks into rehearsals. One of the most devastating things about that is that the world will never see the absolute brilliance of what she was doing with the show. But I know it won’t be long before she does something that people can’t ignore. I only hope that I’m lucky enough to be a part of it!

What would be your advice to girls and women?

Don’t let anyone steal your joy, including yourself. The sooner you learn what respect is, the sooner you can start to truly build your strength. Also, just be kind. It goes a long way, maybe not always in getting what you want, but in feeling like a human being.

Any stray thoughts?

Check out: Adopt, don’t shop! And I LOVE my husband, Colin.
